Dollar Tree Seashell Garland DIY

Hey there! I have been wanting to add more content on my blog for a while now and I honestly have so much of it on my YouTube channel already that I think one of the best things I can do is add some of those projects here whenever I have the extra time.

I have been on a coastal kick lately and I think summer is just the perfect time to add little subtle coastal touches throughout our homes. I don’t know about you, but if I can add anything to my home that reminds me of the beach, it makes me that much happier, especially during the warmer months.

A simple thing you can add to a vignette, a shelf or a tray is a simple garland. And while I know that beaded garlands are not that “hip” anymore a simple seashell garland is really unique and can add a beautiful touch of the coast to your home. And if you happen to have some seashells from a previous beach trip this can be done almost for free.

I didn’t have a lot of large ones on hand so I just stopped at my local Dollar Tree and grabbed a few bags to get mine started. If I remember correctly I only used 2 bags worth of seashells. I made sure to use the larger ones as well.

The first thing you need to do is get a drill with a smaller drill bit.

*You want to use a mask for this and do this in a well ventilated area. Seashell dust is not good for the lungs.*

Make sure you take your time when drilling. Surprisingly enough these are pretty tough shells and don’t crack easy.

Next you want to get some jute and some small wooden beads as well as one pearl bead if you wish. I started with a loop and added the pearl bead before I added my first seashell.

You want to thread a seashell, wood bead, seashell, wood bead etc. The wood bead will separate the shells from each other so they don’t lay inside each other and you can see more of them along the garland.

Here is what that should look like. I used a large embroidery needle for this.

When you are done, all you need to do is add one final bead and make a knot.

Then add it to a tray, a stack of books or a bowl.

You can see the little loop and pearl that I started the garland with.

It’s a super simple idea, but I think it adds unique interest to any space. And since it’s not a large piece, it can be easily stored away after the summer is over.
