Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

Happy Wednesday friends! Hope you are well. Today is the Look for Less Challenge over on my Youtube channel and I am really excited because it is something that my subscribers really enjoy. So of course, I am sharing my look for less dupe here as well!

If you are not familiar with the Look for Less Challenge, it is where I challenge fellow Youtubers to recreate high end home decor pieces on a smaller budget.

I saw these gorgeous candle holders on Pottery Barn’s website and I instantly wanted to recreate them… because, why not?!

If I were to buy a pair of these I would spend $158 (plus tax)… so let’s see what I come up with.

I found these larger rings on Amazon. The smaller one is 8 inches in diameter and the larger one is 10 inches. You can always use embroidery hoops for this, however, these are thicker and wider and I thought they would do a much better job at replicating the original ones.

I like to get these dupes as close to the originals as possible so these were a great find for this DIY.

In my stash, I had these Christmas craft ornaments from a couple years ago. I hadn’t found a reason to use them yet (hoarder, I know). They were 50% off at the time and I thought they would be perfect for the round base to place the candle on.

I removed the tops with my handy miter sheers.

And then sanded the edge smooth.

Next, I had some of this stuff called Edgemate. This is the stuff you iron onto plywood to clean the edges up. We are working on my studio right now and we had some left over from when my husband built the bottom cabinets for my space.

I sliced them in half to make them thinner and hot-glued it onto the perimeter of the round disc, giving it a slight lip.

Tip: If you don’t have something like Edgemate, you can always use an embroidery hoop for this step. They are inexpensive and work well for this.

I also had scrap pieces of plywood that my husband cut down to these small pieces. These were perfect for the bottom base.

Next, I used wood glue to adhere the hoops onto the plywood rectangles. I made the rectangles different sizes to complement the different size hoops.

Tip: If you have rough edges on your plywood, use wood putty to fill in the raw edge and sand them to make them smooth.

If you notice above on the left side of the image, there is a small dowel piece – that small piece is glued on next. It was literally a small scrap piece of dowel that I cut into two pieces.

Finally, I glued the round disc onto the dowel piece and I let everything dry at once.

After they dried completely, I used black chalk paint to give them one coat of paint. Then after they dried, I used my brushed metal acrylic paint in “brushed black” to give it a more metal look.

You can see the difference between the flat black chalk paint and the metallic paint below.

I let that layer of paint dry and that was it! I love how these turned out!

What do you think?

I love having both of them in the two different sizes. These are slightly smaller than the originals but no one would really know the difference.

I think we have another amazing Pottery Barn dupe! So how did I do?

I tallied up what I spent for this which includes the hoops and the ornaments and it totaled $17. The paint and scraps I used where not included in this final cost, but you could easily do these for about $25 should you need to buy everything.
